If you are facing criminal charges, do not make a statement or agree to an interview with the police just because you think you may seem guilty if you refuse. You do not have to say anything to anyone before you speak to an attorney. Remember this: The goal of the authorities is to convict people as quickly as possible. Generally, if the authorities have enough evidence to charge you with the crime, they would not be requesting an interview from you. That is not to say they won’t file charges anyway, but don’t give them more information, even if you think you are helping yourself.
